The book had five hundred pages, and it contained a whole range of children’s games – not just Kniffel – and it sold two thousand copies. In the 1870s and 80s there were no fewer than ten different versions of Kniffel published in Germany within twelve years. Kniffel spread throughout Germany and was soon played in other countries such as the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland.
